The Full time Midlife

Living life to the full every day

Health

When you are young, you don’t worry about your health. It doesn’t even cross your mind. You sleep when you are tired and eat when you are hungry, and in a way that’s the way it should be. If you get sick, or as you get older the signs of your mind and body requiring care and attention become more obvious. Late and short nights become more uncomfortable, and I guess at some point almost unbearable. Having an unhealthy diet also starts showing on your body, and increasingly affects your everyday performance and the way you feel.

I have always enjoyed sports, more or less competitive. Playing soccer, basketball, football, skiing, hiking, sailing, bicycling etc. has been a very normal part of my life. I guess there has also been an inbuilt need for me to stay in shape to be able to be active and join in any sports activity. At one moment in life I made a conscious decision to quit sports for a couple of years, as I needed all the time and energy for simultaneously building our first house and for supporting my wife with our first baby. Tough times with very little sleep and lots of physical strain. The years went by and the mode stayed pretty much the same. More kids, more projects, little time to keep up with a healthy lifestyle.

Now everything seems to be getting a bit easier when it comes to family and house building and renovations. We live in a new house and the kids are big enough to at least let everybody sleep well. Recently I have had the time to look back at our lives and reflect on the way we have felt at different stages. All in all it has been a pretty rough 15 years with ups and downs. Hopefully we can now take it a bit easier and give ourselves the chance to enjoy good sleep, healthy food and lots of exercise. Those are building blocks with an increasing importance for a healthy midlife, and the years after.

The guidelines for a good health at this age are pretty simple, I think. Make healthy choices in your diet, exercise every day and ensure enough sleep. The trouble is with consistently following those goals. And the big thing to remember is that everything affects everything, mind and body are one. More about this later.

New Posts

Just to make this clear to my readers, I have recently posted under the topics in the top menu. I created this page structure to keep the site more readable and clear, as there will be posts in different categories, and they will be easier to access in the future with some sort of categorization.

Maybe I will just add a post on the front page in the future and then move it to the most suitable category when the next post comes along. Any suggestions regarding this?

In any case, please also check the menu for new posts, or old ones by category.

The challenging start

After giving this idea a few years to brew, I finally decided to go ahead with my own blog. If you look at the most popular, or best, or most interesting blogs having anything to do with midlife, you will find that 98 % are by women, for women. And that is totally ok, of course. But where is the male perspective? Are men not interested in reading anything regarding this topic, or are they not interested in writing, blogging, sharing?

This blog will not be only about what happens to your mind and body in midlife (officially age 45 to 65, right?), but rather a site to share experiences, knowledge and wisdom accumulated by this age. It doesn’t have to be, and will not be, complicated or academic. Sometimes it may be about the economy, another time about family, nutrition, training, cars, dogs, relationships, construction, whatever touches our lives.

About me

A friend of mine once said that I should speak out more, as I seem to have a few wise things to say. That comment has remained with me for years now, and maybe this is the right media for me to speak out, get some feedback, learn, go back to think tank, and at best help others in their journey. Now at the early years of midlife I can start experiencing some of the changes and the mindset that are commonly considered normal at this stage of life.

I am first and foremost a proud father of four wonderful children, and a husband to a great wife. Work is something that I take very seriously, and mostly also greatly enjoy. At the moment I work in an international business environment, which is extremely interesting.

My hobbies are closely tied to the interests of my family. The kids do all kinds of sports from mountain biking and downhill skiing to cheerleading and gymnastics. Our young labrador retriever keeps us active outdoors and as a family we also enjoy boating, cabin life and travelling in general.

The big topics for me around the everyday life are along the lines of economy and economics, sustainability, and future on a more general level. How should we tackle or at least approach challenges like climate change and pollution, population explosion and on the other hand ageing population? The issues are endless, but then again I believe that we are living in the most prosperous time in the history of mankind.
